What Is the TOEFL iBT? The Current 2026 Format and Scoring System

The TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is an international English proficiency exam administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and accepted by 11,500+ universities in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and more than 160 countries. After 2023, ETS shortened the exam, and today it takes about 2 hours.

The Current 2026 TOEFL iBT Format:

Reading – 35 minutes: 2 academic texts, 20 questions in total. Each text is around 700 words.
Listening – 36 minutes: 2 long academic lectures + 3 conversations. 28 questions in total.
Speaking – 16 minutes: 4 tasks. 1 Independent + 3 Integrated.
Writing – 29 minutes: 2 tasks. 1 Integrated (reading + listening + writing) + 1 Academic Discussion essay.

Total score: 0–120 (each section: 0–30)

80+: State universities, entry to most master’s programmes.

The Reading Section: The 6 Most Common Question Types and Strategies

According to British Institute experts’ analysis of the 2024–2026 exams, the following question types come up in TOEFL Reading with a recurrence rate of over 85%:

Factual Information: “According to paragraph 2, what is…” — The answer comes directly from the text. Strategy: find the key word from the question in the text and read that paragraph. Do not read the whole text from the beginning.
Negative Factual Information (EXCEPT questions): “All of the following are mentioned EXCEPT…” — 3 correct options appear in the text; you have to find the wrong one. Look for each option in the text one by one.
Inference: “What can be inferred from paragraph 4?” — A logical inference not written in the text. Do not over-interpret; choose what the text most closely implies.
Vocabulary (Word in Context): “The word X in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to…” — Take the word out, put the option in and test whether the sentence makes sense. It is the meaning in context, not the dictionary meaning.
Sentence Simplification: “Which of the following best expresses the essential information in the highlighted sentence?” — The option simplified without changing the meaning. Options containing specific details are usually wrong.
Prose Summary: The last question type, worth 3 points. You choose 3 of 6 options. Choose the options that support the main ideas; those containing details and examples are usually wrong.

Expert Tactic — Reverse Reading: Scan the questions first and mark them. Then look for the answer to each question as you read the text. This technique helps you use exam time about 25% more efficiently on average.

The Listening Section: Multiply Your Score with a Note-Taking System

Listening is the section where regular study brings the fastest score increases. British Institute’s proven Note-Taking system:

In lectures: Note the main idea of the topic, 3-4 subtopics and the examples given. Do not write word for word — use symbols (e.g. → = “leads to”, ≠ = “different from”).
In conversations: Note what the two speakers want and how the problem is solved. Separate them as Person A / Person B.

The Most Common Question Types:

Main Idea: “What is the main topic of the lecture?” — Pay attention to the introduction and conclusion.
Detail: “According to the professor, what is…?” — Look at your notes.
Function: “Why does the professor mention X?” — Did they give an example to support the topic, or open a new topic?
Inference: “What can be inferred about…?” — Find what the professor implies.
Attitude: “What is the professor’s attitude toward…?” — Clues from tone of voice and stress.

The Speaking Section: Formulas for the 4 Tasks

TOEFL Speaking is the section Turkish candidates struggle with most — but every task has a clear formula:

Task 1 – Independent: Defend your opinion on a topic.
Formula: Main idea (1 sentence) → Reason 1 + example → Reason 2 + example → Short summary.
Time: 15 sec preparation, 45 sec speaking. Target: 5+ sentences, 2 clear reasons.
Task 2 – Campus Situation (Integrated): Reading + Listening → Summarising.
Formula: What the announcement says → What the speaker’s attitude is → 2 reasons why.
Note: Do not add your own opinion.
Task 3 – Academic Course (Integrated): Definition of a concept (reading) + example (lecture).
Formula: Define the concept → Explain the example the professor gives.
Task 4 – Academic Lecture (Integrated): Listening only → Main point + 2 details.
Formula: What was the topic of the lecture → Main point 1 + example → Main point 2 + example.

Scoring Tips: Delivery (fluency), Language Use (grammar + vocabulary), Topic Development (content). Perfect pronunciation is not required — clear, organised and fluent speech determines the score.

The Writing Section: The New 2026 Format — Academic Discussion

The biggest change ETS introduced in 2023: the old “Independent Essay” was removed and replaced by the Academic Discussion task.

Writing Task 1 – Integrated: 3 minutes of reading + listening to a lecture → Write how the lecture refutes or supports the reading. 150-225 words. Do not add your own opinion.
Writing Task 2 – Academic Discussion: Take part in a virtual class discussion. The professor asks a question, 2 students answer — and you write your own opinion in 10 minutes. Target: 100–120 words, a clear argument and addressing the other side.

British Institute Template for Academic Discussion:
“I agree/disagree with [student’s name]’s view that… However, I believe [your own view]… For instance, [concrete example]… Therefore, [concluding sentence].”
