The YDS (Foreign Language Exam) is a foreign language exam organised by ÖSYM, taken to demonstrate the foreign language proficiency required by public institutions and organisations, as well as by candidates who want to be appointed to public-sector and academic positions.

The Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (YDS) is a language exam in which candidates are asked 80 questions and given a total of 3 hours (180 minutes).

With their YDS results, candidates can certify their proficiency not only in English but in many other foreign languages. In this context, the exam is offered in many languages, above all English, German, Arabic, French and Russian.

A YDS score is valid for 5 years, and candidates can check their exam results online through the ÖSYM Candidate Transactions System. Candidates who wish can also check their results through the ÖSYM Results Announcement System.

The YDS, taken by candidates who want to do a master's or PhD or be appointed to academic positions, is also in great demand among public employees who want to receive the language allowance. YDS scores are also valid for associate professorship and proficiency-in-art applications, and for placement in the TUS (Medical Specialty Exam) and DUS (Dental Specialty Exam).

Because of all this scope and these advantages, as with language exams such as TOEFL and IELTS, many language centres, English courses, YDS courses and so on offer candidates private lessons as part of YDS preparation programmes.
